Great Wall of China Tourist Attraction

Now if you have traveled to China for a vacation holiday or on a business trip, people will inevitably ask you whether you have visited The Great Wall of China? Why is this tourist attraction in China so attractive? It is because if you have not gone sightseeing at the Great Wall of China, then your China vacation is missing out a great deal. Here is why.

The Great Wall of China is an integral feature of the geography of Northern China and has captured the imaginations of people throughout its long and distinguished history or some people may wish to think of as its notorious history. The Chinese call this magnificent wall Wan Li Chang Cheng when literally translate means Wall of Ten Thousand Li. A Li is a Chinese measurement of distance such as a mile or kilometer.

The Great Wall of China saw its first piecemeal construction from the fifth century BC down to the 16th century AD as a strategic deterrence against raids, plunders and even invasions from northern nomadic tribes of which the Chinese at that time regarded as hostile barbarians.

When the Chinese were unified under Emperor Qin Shi Huang or Shi Huangdi in 221 BC, the first emperor of China started the construction of the Great Wall to protect China’s northern border towns and villages against the Huns, Xiong Nu tribesman. The words Xiong Nu when directly translated from Chinese literally means Fierce Fury. You can imagine how the Chinese was so fearful of this tribe by labeling it with such a name.

The Xiong Nus were finally driven to the far flung corners of the Gobi desert after 3 Chinese military search and destroy expeditions. Even then, the walls failed to curb the invasion of China by the Mongols (Yuan Dynasty) and the Manchurians (Ching Dynasty).

Historical records showed that as many as 300,000 men working for ten years on the first phase of the wall’s construction. Stories of hardship and thousands of tragic death suffered by the conscripted laborers are passed down to show that Shi Huangdi was a hated tyrant.

Constructed mostly with bricks and masonry, the wall was built by Chinese rulers of 10 dynasties and the length of the wall, meandering through mountains and valleys totaled an incredible 25,000 km or almost 16,000 miles long.

Since the 1950s, five parts of the wall have been restored and like most tourists, I visited the wall from the Badaling section one winter afternoon in Nankou Pass after a visit to the Ming Tombs. I was awestruck with the wall structure as well as the fantastically stunning winter scenery and landscape.

The second most popular access to the Great Wall is through Mutianyu, northeast of Beijing in Huairou County. The advantage of visiting the Great Wall of China from this point is that it is less crowded than the Badaling access. Is it any wonder then that tourists visiting China usually include a sightseeing trip to the majestic Great Wall of China?

The Far East stretches all the way from Japan down to Bali, and there are many countries that can be visited in this region. The two most popular cities visited in Japan are Tokyo and Kyoto.

The top hotels in Tokyo are the Hilton Tokyo Hotel and the New Otani Hotel; both have five star ratings, and the Hilton Tokyo hotel has an indoor swimming pool, fitness complex and a wide selection of bars and restaurants. There are 806 rooms, all housed in one building, which is located in a buzzing area of Tokyo. The New Otani Hotel also boasts a five star rating, and has become one of the favourite hotels for government leaders, business executives and discriminating travellers. The hotel is located in a serene 10 acre Japanese garden that dates back to the 16th century. In Kyoto, the two top hotels are the Righa Royal Hotel and the New Miyako Hotel. Both hotels offer excellent cuisine and accommodation, and are conveniently located.

If visiting Beijing, then a hotel that is close to the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square while offering world class accommodation is what would be required. The first choice would be the Marco Polo Beijing Hotel, which offers first class and stylish accommodation. Another excellent hotel in Beijing is the Shangri La Hotel, which is superbly located in a beautifully landscaped garden.

Hong Kong has a large variety of hotels that offer accommodation for the most luxurious to the budget conscious traveller. It is quite difficult to choose the best hotels of Hong Kong, but the Shangri La Meridian hotel is conveniently located and is an award winning hotel. The second choice in Hong Kong would be the Intercontinental Grand Stafford Hotel, which is also an ideal place to stay and its location is convenient for both sight seeing or business visits.

If travelling to Manila, the two top hotels to stay in would definitely have to be the Richmonde or the Holiday Inn Galleria. Both hotels offer all modern amenities and are highly rated by visitors. If one hops over to Cambodia for a visit, the best hotel in Siem Reap would be the De La Paix Hotel, which is a stylish hotel with all modern facilities and warm and friendly staff.

Moving on, Bangkok in Thailand is another city that has some superb hotels for visitors. The top choice in Bangkok would be the Bangkok Marriott Resort & Spa, which is located a boat ride away from Bangkok’s famous sites, and the second choice would be the Conrad Hotel, which has been thoughtfully designed in the Thai architectural style.

Begin in Beijing – Travel Information

The best way to kick off your Asian travels is in China’s progressive and even tragically hip capital city of Beijing. Traditional relics like the Tiananmen gate stand juxtaposed against the imposing modernist architecture of recent history, most notable in the Dashanzi Art District. The People’s Republic of China has its financial industries mainly in Shanghai and Hong Kong, but Beijing remains the nation’s true cultural and political center.

Orange County Meets Ming Dynasty in Beijing

When many travelers think of Beijing, they imagine the dictatorial atmosphere of Mao Zedong or television images of protesting citizens; however, Beijing has a tremendous history beginning as early as the 1st century BCE and has persevered through Kublai Kahn’s Mongols, Japanese invasion, and the Communist Civil War victory in 1949.

The Forbidden City is a fascinating journey through 500 years of Imperial secrecy. The head of state no longer resides here and the beautiful buildings and breathtaking gardens are open to the public year-round. The entrance to the Forbidden City is the infamous Tiananmen Square and gate, protected by four formidable marble lions. Nearby, the Temple of Heaven is another sublime representation of an era of dynasties and royal architecture. With airfare to Beijing, you also have the extra opportunity to see the Great Wall of China, which is only one and a half hours away by bus.

Although there are hundreds of historical sites in Beijing, the rapidly sprawling metropolis is also overflowing with contemporary wonders and luxuries. The National Zoo houses the largest inland aquarium in the world as well as China’s famous pandas. Next to the Imperial Palace, the Wan Fung Art Gallery provides insight into the artistic transition from regal and traditional to cutting edge contemporary. Most interestingly, the suburban sprawl has witnessed the creation of a $60 million American-inspired community called Orange County, complete with town homes and tract housing.

Chinese Cultural Centrifuge in Beijing

Experience two cultural traditions in one at the Laoshe Tea House where you will be both charmed by Chinese opera and soothed by a variety of traditional teas. For world-class shopping in Beijing, visit Wangfujing, or you can find your way into the many enchanting smaller districts for traditional Chinese shops and boutiques. Beijing is also home to several notable temples like the Miaoying, and even a mosque that was built in 996.

With such dynamic experiences to offer and the immaculate preservation of its past, Beijing is truly an international city and there’s no wonder the cosmopolis has been chosen for the Olympics. Get your airfare to Beijing now or wait for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.

The Chinese New Year is celebrated with much colour and enthusiasm and spans 15 days from the start of the New Year. This year Beijing will be celebrating the Chinese New Year on January 26th, this year is called the year of the Ox. This year will be the year 4707 according to the Chinese calendar. The Chinese follow a lunisolar calendar, incorporating both the phases of the moon and also the revolutions of the earth around the sun. The Chinese New Year is also called the Spring Festival. Even though the New Year falls on the 26th of January the festivities are not restricted to this one day. Normally the celebrations go on for days, with various festivities being held to herald in the New Year.

On the first day, all food consumed would have been cooked the day before. Families pay homage to the old and elderly, generally the oldest member of the extended family. Wealthy families have Lion Dance performances that are held. Kids, teens and young unmarried members of the family get red packets that have cash in them from the married members of the family. Firecrackers are also lit during this day and there are fireworks displays as well. On second day married daughters go and make a trip to their birth parents. Day three and four no visiting is done s it is considered bad luck.

The fifth day involves eating dumplings. The seventh day yusheng and tossed raw fish salad is eaten. On the ninth day prayers are made to the Jade Emperor of Heaven. The fifteenth day is celebrated with eating rice dumplings Tangyuan. Candles are also lit outside the house and the day is celebrated as the Lantern Festival. Families parade the street with lanterns. This is the last day of celebrations of the Chinese New Year.

Staying a few days in Beijing would definitely be a good idea; one can stay at a Beijing Hotel while enjoying the festivities. For the luxury seeker a definite option would be a stay at a luxury hotel in Beijing such as Raffles Beijing Hotel.
