Ancient Zhoukoudian

Zhoukoudian situated approximately 40 kilometers southwest of Beijing. Scientific exploration at the place is underway and the excavation location has generated skeletal remains of so called Sinanthropus pekinensis, who is considered to have inhabited the area at Pleistocene Age. Besides, remains of Homo sapiens skeletons going back 20,000 years have been discovered here. Scientists suppose this area has witnessed human settlement for the last 700,000 years.

When scientific research is referred this is the most ground breaking digging sites across the globe; however it’s a thrilling tourist attraction. This is one of the few spots where the public can attend a pre historic excavation location, where work continues. The place was excavated in 1927 at first time in a cave near Dragon Bone Hill at Zhoukoudian. Skeletal remains of Peking Man found and provided evidence that the territory around Beijing was the primitive hominoids’ habitat. Continuing excavations have resulted in discovering six skulls and bones from 40 individuals varying from 700,000 to 200,000 years.
